I must be missing something here. Horizontal layering, straight-on shot with subject dead centre, small in frame, cluttered background, ugly benches, distracting tin, with no colour to lift it.....is this a wind-up??

Margo! Lovely true life shot.
#3-the horizontal layering works well here. As far as calling a bench, or any other item in a natural setting ugly...than that would be true manipulation and not an honest capture. )

Well, since it wasn`t a staged shot you don`t really suspect me to ask people move to another bench or complain to city officials that their benches are ugly?
Anyway, I agree the composition is really simple and dead symmetrical. The restaurant signs had to be readable so they would complement the subject, hence no blurred background. IMO, simple layering works best in this situation.
